It is important to be sure you take the right tests and are ready to be hired for special education. Here's the deal--
1. Everyone who wants to be a special education teacher MUST pass the special education test. ECAP is here to help you with that--we will give you access to the online special education review at no charge. When you apply to ECAP, email me or Sheryl Woods and request the review.
2. If you want to teach special education at the elementary level you SHOULD pass the EC-6 TExES test also.
3. If you want to teach special education at the middle school level you SHOULD pass the Generalist 4-8 TExES tes also.
4. If you want to teach special education at high school it really gets complicated!!!
At any grade level if you will be teaching Content Mastery or Inclusion, you only need the special education test because the "regular" teacher will give the grades.
Note that I suggested that Elementary and Middle School take content tests as well as special education tests. That is because you do not know what job may be offered and if you have both the content and the special education tests, you will be more marketable.
If you will be at high school and teaching Resource you have to meet the Highly Qualified requirement for the subject you will be teaching (i.e. English, math. etc.). If you are teaching a Self Contained class such as Behavior Modification you must meet the Highly Qualified requirement for one of the core subjects--English, math. or science--.
My suggestion--Pass the special education test first then pass either the EC-6 or Generalist 4-8 to be safe. If you get an offer at high school, contact me or your ECAP consultant to determine what you need to meet requirements.
